To pick the most comfortable heels, I probed PureWow editors, most of whom are New Yorkers, for recommendations they swear by. I also honed in on the styles within my own closet that have stood the test of time (I’m talking years) and have proven wearable, comfortable and have kept my feet blister-free. I also considered heel height—most pairs on this list range from around two to three inches in height—and walkability, which boils down to many factors, including platform features, height, cushioning and toe box widths, just to name a few, all measured into a digestible score out of ten that’s weighted on the editors’ reviews. What Should You Consider When Shopping for Comfortable Heels?
When you’re searching for a pair of comfortable heels, it’s best to keep a few things in mind.
- Wear heels in moderation: “Wearing heels will put added pressure and stress on the ball of the foot while also shifting the center of gravity forward, forcing the back to arch further causing lower back pain,” warns Dr. Daughtry. As she explains, your feet will feel a need to compensate when they’re at an angle in order to maintain balance and gait, causing muscles and tendons to pull joints out of alignment—hence why your feet might hurt after a long stint, even in flat shoes. “Heels can lead to multiple different conditions including ankle sprains, plantar fasciitis, Achilles tendonitis, metatarsalgia, neuromas, as well as knee, hip and back pain. Worn chronically, the foot will develop foot deformities such as bunions and hammertoes or toe deformities,” she adds. TLDR? Like most things in life, moderation is key when it comes to wearing heels.
- Height of the heel: It may seem common sense, but lower, chunkier heels tend to be more walkable. “To avoid significant issues and pain, look for heels that are no higher than three inches, as heels that are higher than this will significantly alter your gait, leading to knee and lower back issues as well as the toll it takes on your feet,” suggests Dr. Daughtry. Kitten heels with a height between one to two inches will feel the most comfortable and keep you from aches and pains.
- Don’t skimp on the support: I’m talking arch support, roomy toe boxes, cushiony soles, wider heel bases and the lot. “Look for heels that have a wider or more stable heel and preferably a more platform style sole to keep pressure off the ball of the foot,” advises Dr. Daughtry. “Also, if the shoe offers an ankle strap option, this is ideal to give extra stability and support to the ankle joint to prevent falls and ankle sprains” And never forget that a sole with *lots* of padding will keep your arches feeling supported and at ease.

How Can You Make Heels More Comfortable?
“Look for heels that offer arch support, adequate cushioning (with added bonus if it offers metatarsal padding to help offload forefoot pressure), supportive straps around the midfoot and ankle and a deeper heel cup for more support to the heel,” says Dr. Daughtry. If you want to go the extra mile, I find that adding your own foot padding inserts can help alleviate pressure and make your current shoe selection feel all the more comfortable. Dr. Scholl’s padded roll is a great option if you want to customize the shape to your specificities, otherwise there are inserts like these metatarsal pads for the balls of your feet that’ll slide perfectly into most heels. And don’t forget about heel pad inserts if you’re experiencing ankle slips.
What's the Most Comfortable Type of High Heels?
According to Dr. Daughtry, stability and support are key to finding high heels that are comfortable. “The most comfortable type of heel is one that is more of a wedge or platform style shoe, as more of the shoe and the foot is in contact with the ground, which assists with stability and cushioning across the entire foot structure and avoiding excessive shifting of the center of gravity,” she says. That explains why our testers found that they could dance and walk in the Marseilles wedges from Soludos and Katy Perry’s The Meadow platforms for longer bouts than the average heel.
Will a Thick Heel Feel More Comfortable and Supportive than a Thin Stiletto?
“A thicker heel is definitely more comfortable and supportive than a thinner stiletto as there is more surface area for the foot to rest upon when trying to walk. As pointed out above, the more support the shoe can offer, the less stress on the foot, ankle, knee and back,” says Dr. Daughtry. In other words, more surface area = less wobbles and more support.
